Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis

Description

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis is a process of selecting the embryo that is most likely to result in a successful pregnancy through IVF. We can identify any chromosomal defects in your embryos during a sophisticated screening process. It can be performed both in fresh embryo transfers and those involving frozen embryos.

The pre-implantation genetic diagnosis is a method how we try to select embryos to transfer. We know that not every embryo is going to implant. The goal is to select and find the best embryo that will help the patient conceive, ideally, the first time. We also prefer to transfer only one whenever we can. The goal is always to have a singleton and not multiple. And the method, we know that about 50% to 80% of all embryos aren't going to have chromosomal defects. By identifying those before we transfer them back, we are able to select the best embryo that can be transferred back into the patient and this way give her the best possible chances to conceive, ideally, the very first time and, ideally, with a single embryo. What the patient does not see is what happens in the laboratory once we obtain the eggs, once the embryo is created in a laboratory. There is a lot of work happening behind the scenes to analyze those. There are different laboratory methods that we can employ to analyze the chromosomes in the embryo. It used to be a more simple method with using fluorescent dyes and using a microscope. That evolved to an array CGH, which is a more advanced method. However, most recently, we have the next-gen sequencing, which does allow us to sequence the embryo to a much higher accuracy where we can provide the patient with results overnight. So the goal is to biopsy the embryo one day, run the sequencing overnight and then transfer the next day if the patient desires a fresh embryo transfer. There are some patients that might benefit from freezing the embryo before placing it back into the patient. We are happy that we can offer the most advanced treatment just evolved in the last couple of years. We can offer that laboratory technique overnight. We can do fresh transfers with next-gen sequencing. We prefer to biopsy the embryos on day five and transfer them on day six.
