Fertility Treatment Options for Single Men By Paula Hovell on January 05, 2021

fertility consultationIn the 21st century, the definition of family has evolved well beyond the nuclear family of years past. At the Center for Fertility and Gynecology, our team of fertility specialists believe that everyone should have the opportunity to build the family they desire. This should not be impeded by a person’s sexual identity or their relationship status.

One of the many ways that our fertility center assists people in building their family is by offering a range of fertility treatment options for single men. The treatments allow single men in the Los Angeles, CA, Tarzana, CA, and Bakersfield, CA, area to create the family they desire in the timeframe that is right for them.

Surrogacy and Egg Donation

While men can amply raise children on their own, as far as biology is concerned, it takes a male and female to conceive a child. If a single man wants to have a child that is biologically his, he will need to work with an egg donor and/or surrogate while undergoing fertility treatment.

There are two types of surrogates that our patients can work with. First is a gestational surrogate, which is the most common type of surrogate. A gestational surrogate is a woman who agrees to carry an embryo that is not biologically related to her. In other words, the embryo has been created using a sperm sample and another woman’s eggs.

The second surrogacy option is a traditional surrogate. A traditional surrogate is biologically related to the child she carries. This means that her own eggs are fertilized with the intended father’s sperm.

If our patients are working with a gestational surrogate, they will need to work with an egg donor as well. An egg donor donates their eggs to be used in fertility treatment, but they do not carry the pregnancy.

Patients have the option of working with known surrogates and egg donors, or of selecting donors from an agency. In either case, our fertility specialists can help patients facilitate the selection process so that they are ready to proceed with fertility treatment.

In Vitro Fertilization

In vitro fertilization, or IVF, is one of the fertility treatments available to single men. During IVF treatment, donor eggs are collected and then fertilized with the intended father’s sperm. Our fertility doctors monitor the embryos for several days, and then chosen embryos are selected for transfer. During the transfer process, embryos are placed directly into the surrogate’s uterus, where they have the chance to implant and result in a successful pregnancy. Because of the nature of IVF treatment, this method is usually used by single men who are working with both an egg donor and gestational surrogate.

Intrauterine Insemination

Intrauterine insemination, or IUI, is the fertility treatment most often recommended to single men who are working with a traditional surrogate. When this technique is used, the surrogate undergoes ovarian stimulation to promote the production and release of multiple mature eggs. Then, during the IUI procedure, a washed sample of the intended father’s sperm is introduced into the surrogate’s uterus. This process reduces the distance that sperm have to travel and significantly increases the chance of conception.
