Losing a pregnancy can take an emotional and physical toll on you. It can take time to mourn the loss and process what happened. When you’re ready to try again, you may start thinking about ways to increase the chances of a successful pregnancy.

You’ve probably read a lot about in vitro fertilization (IVF) to address infertility, but it could also be used to help people who’ve had past miscarriages.

Let’s discuss how fertility treatment can help people who’ve experienced pregnancy loss. We can provide more information when you visit our fertility offices serving Los Angeles County.

How IVF Can Help Patients With Past Pregnancy Loss

While IVF is not the only fertility treatment that can help overcome previous pregnancy loss, it is an effective option to consider.

During IVF, an egg is fertilized in a lab setting so it can develop into a viable embryo. The embryos can be tested to help increase the probability of successful pregnancy before they are transferred to the mother’s uterus.

Careful Screening and Testing as Part of the Process

Part of the testing and screening process for IVF involves pre-implantation genetic diagnosis/screening (PGD/PGS). PGD and PGS help us screen for genetic conditions and chromosomal abnormalities that could put a pregnancy at risk.

Additional Options: Egg Donors and Surrogacy

If you do not have viable eggs for IVF or it is risky to carry a child to term yourself, we also offer egg donation and surrogacy.

Egg Donors

Egg donation is when another woman donates her eggs to be used in an IVF procedure. This is a good option to consider for women who can carry a pregnancy to term themselves but may have issues with their own eggs that put pregnancy at risk. Our team can help you select a donor who meets your needs.

Surrogacy

Surrogacy is when another woman carries a child to term. This is a good option for women who are unable to carry a child to term themselves or who have experienced multiple miscarriages in the past and want to avoid further pregnancy loss.

There are two kinds of surrogacy:
