There is nothing more frustrating and emotionally taxing than trying to conceive a child without success. Through the words of encouragement, the hope, and the prayers, many couples find themselves wondering, “Why us?” While this question may be impossible to answer philosophically, modern science offers possible answers - and solutions.

Approximately 40 percent of infertility cases involve dysfunction of the male reproductive system. At our Los Angeles fertility center, the Center for Fertility and Gynecology, we offer a range of advanced tests that allow us to diagnose instances of male factor infertility. By identifying the root causes of infertility, we are able to offer couples true hope for a solution.

At our clinic in Los Angeles, male infertility treatment of the highest quality is available to those who wish to realize their dreams of bringing a beautiful new life into the world.

Tests for Male Factor Infertility

When a couple turns to our fertility experts in Los Angeles, we first perform a comprehensive evaluation of both partners in order to establish a foundation for further testing. This evaluation includes a complete medical history, as well as an analysis of the male partner’s semen. Semen analysis may need to be performed multiple times before accurate conclusions can be drawn; if, however, our specialists find the male partner’s sperm to be normal after careful analysis, more extensive testing of the female partner is most commonly recommended before additional sperm and hormone tests are conducted on the male partner.

Among the newest and most advanced tests we offer is sperm chromatin structure assay, or SCSA. This diagnostic test identifies sperm that have substantial DNA fragmentation, or gaps in their chromosomes. The test allows us to determine the ratio of healthy, normal sperm to these sperm with DNA fragmentation; a relatively high percentage of the latter is an indicator of one possible cause of male infertility.

Other male infertility tests available at our Los Angeles infertility clinic include scrotal ultrasound, the measurement of testosterone levels, and post-ejaculation urinalysis.

Treatment of Male Infertility

If a high percentage of sperm with DNA fragmentation is discovered through SCSA, our specialists most often recommend PICSI dish aided sperm selection or testicular sperm extraction (TESE) as a means of improving the couple’s chances of successful conception. In cases in which male factor infertility is definitively diagnosed, we sit down with couples to explain their treatment options in detail, going over the advantages, disadvantages, risks, and likelihood of success associated with each. At our fertility center in Los Angeles, in vitro fertilization (IVF), intrauterine insemination (IUI), and intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) are among the advanced infertility treatment options we offer to our patients.

In some cases, in searching for a localized cause of male infertility, we uncover an underlying, more general health issue. When this happens, we refer patients to trusted specialists for treatment.
