Why Choose Surrogacy?
Surrogacy provides a way for couples who can’t become pregnant or face other barriers to pregnancy have children of their own. It also makes it possible for one or both partners in an LGBTQ relationship to have children they are biologically connected to.
Gay male partners who want to have their own children may be able to by having a surrogate carry their child for them. Lesbian couples may also turn to surrogacy when neither person in the relationship is able to become pregnant.
Surrogacy Considerations
Once a couple decides to undergo surrogacy, they will need to make several decisions. Of course one of the biggest decisions is choosing a surrogate. This may be done using a surrogacy agency or the couple may choose a close friend or sometimes a family member. In addition to choosing a surrogate, couples must decide who will provide the sperm or eggs.
- Same-sex male couples: Same-sex male couples may choose one partner to be the biological father. Another option is to mix both partner’s sperm so that the exact biological father can be unknown. If both partners want a biological connection to their child, one partner’s sperm can be combined with the eggs of a family member of the other partner.
- Lesbian couples: Lesbian couples choosing surrogacy may use their own eggs, if possible. Additionally, a sperm donor will be needed. The sperm donor may be chosen through an agency or may be a friend or family member. Using a family member’s sperm can make it possible for both partners to share a biological connection to the child.
