This is what makes us one of the leading infertility clinic and fertility treatment centers in the Los Angeles area.

One of the most common parts of fertility treatments for women is the use of fertility drugs. Let's focus on one type of fertility drug in particular known as Clomid and the side effects of taking it.

About Clomid

Clomid is the brand name of the generic drug clomiphene citrate. It is a commonly prescribed drug used to address various kinds of infertility issues in women. The drug will help induce ovulation and also stimulate the production of additional follicles and viable eggs in the ovaries.

Why Clomid Is Part of Fertility Treatments

During fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), Clomid helps produce more viable eggs and helps prompt a woman to ovulate. The drug also causes the release of follicle stimulation hormone (FSH). This allows fertility specialists to retrieve viable eggs when they are mature ready to be fertilized, and to proceed with the rest of the fertility treatment process as planned.

Common Side Effects of Clomid

The most common side effects of Clomid include the following:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Sensitive or sore breasts
  • Abdominal/pelvic discomfort
  • Mood swings
  • Hot flashes

These are all normal side effects and are generally not a cause for alarm.

How long do Clomid side effects last?

Clomid side effects will last for several days while you are on the drug. This can vary from patient to patient, and your fertility specialist will generally have more detailed information regarding these particular matters.

Serious Side Effects That Should Be Brought to Your Doctor's Attention

While the above side effects that we noted are common following the use of Clomid, these side effects below are serious. Patients should discontinue Clomid use and contact their fertility specialist as soon as possible if they experience the following:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of the face
  • Swelling of the extremities
  • Hives
  • Vision problems

Clomid and Multiple Pregnancy

When Clomid is used, patients should note that the chances of having twins, triplets, and other types of multiple birth pregnancies increases. This is an important consideration given the nature of multiple births and how patients react to such matters.

Helping Patients Throughout the Entire Treatment Process

During the entire fertility treatment process, we will be sure to provide you with ample information about all medications that are taken and what side effects are common with each. This will provide you with realistic expectations about the treatment process and will give you a good understanding of all risks and benefits that you will face as part of the treatment process.
